Munich Airport saw year-on-year (YOY) growth in tonnage of 4.2 per cent in the first nine months of 2016.

The Bavarian hub handled 245,700 tonnes during the period, up on the 235,760 tonnes in the same period last year, as it continues to grow its freight business.

Munich says this included a 2.8 per cent rise in co-loaded freight carried by passenger aircraft to a total of more than 200,000 tonnes, while the share of cargo transported on freight-only flights was up 11 per cent to more than 45,000 tonnes.

The gateway says with the start of the new winter timetable period at the end of October, the traffic trend will probably gain momentum and based on current slot bookings, airlines plan to offer about five percent more flights this year than in the last winter season.
