Freight traffic posted impressive monthly year-on-year (YOY) growth of 12.2 per cent in May, according to the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe.

The airport trade body say this surge was on the back of improved economic conditions globally and a rebound in international trade.

Big movers YOY in May included London Heathrow Airport at 10.7 per cent to 143,511 tonnes and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at 12.3 per cent to 151,437 tonnes.

Frankfurt Airport remains the busiest cargo hub in Europe handling 177,118 tonnes, a rise of 5.7 per cent, followed by Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with 164,038 tonnes, an increase of 4.3 per cent.

Other notable tonnage uplifts were Munich Airport, which grew 18.5 per cent to 31,805 tonnes, Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport 39.7 per cent to 18,853 tonnes, and Milan Malpensa Airport 12.4 per cent to 53,355 tonnes.
