Changing fortunes for American Airlines

American Airlines flew 199.4 million cargo ton miles (320.9 million kilometres) in July, continuing the up and down trend seen throughout the year.

July was up on June, April and February when it flew 193.4 million, 197.2 million and 173.5 million, respectively. It is down on May and March when it handled 204.9 million and 213.4 million, respectively. 

July 2014 was up 9.5 per cent on the same month in 2013 when it flew 182 million. All the months were up on 2013, April saw the biggest rise, up 12.9 per cent, while June saw the smallest increase of 1.2 per cent.

Year-to-date cargo ton miles were 1.3 billion, up 9.1 per cent on 2013 when it was 1.2 billion. Cargo revenue was up 31.7 per cent in the first six months of 2014 to $428 million from $325 million. Second quarter revenue was $221 million, up from January to March when it was $206 million. 

Both quarters were up on 2013, January to March was up 32.2 per cent and April to June rose by 31.1 per cent. For 2013, cargo revenue was up 1.4 per cent to $685 million.

American has expanded its routes in the US throughout August with services to Columbus, Washington DC and Salt Lake City starting on 4 August. On 11 August it launched services to Cleveland (US) and Ontario (Canada) and on 18 August it will start services to the US destinations of Fort Myers and Orange County.
