A civil funeral has been held for the six Volga-Dnepr Airlines employees killed in the Mali hotel terrorist attack on 20 November.
The service was held on 30 November in the Russian city of Ulyanovsk and the airline says it was so well attend the civil hall could not accommodate all those wishing to pay tribute to the dead. Volga-Dnepr covered the costs of transporting the bodies back to Russia and the funerals while the families of the victims each received two million roubles ($29,882). Company employees, partners and customers have raised 10 million roubles while Ulyanovsk region governor, Sergey Morozov has ordered payments of one million roubles to each of the families.
The 12 members of staff had been staying at the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako on 20 November, having transported construction machinery from Oslo to Bamako using an Antonov AN-124-100 on 18 – 19 November. Six of the crew were killed when terrorists attacked the hotel at about 07.00h though Special Forces rescued the other six. The dead were named as flight navigator, Alexander Kononenko, radio operator, Vladimir Kudryashov, flight engineer Konstantin Preobrazhenskiy, load master, Sergey Yurasov, and mechanics, Stanislav Dumanskiy and Pavel Kudryavtsev.
The surviving crew have been provided with paid leave and psychological help.
