Sri Lankan internet newspaper ColomboPage is reporting that ministers in Colombo have given the green light to establish a new air cargo terminal at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) due to insufficient capacity to handle the cargo volume.

During the last five years, freight operations had increased annually by 8%, a statement on cabinet decisions said.

Since the airport does not have sufficient capacity relative to the increase in cargo operations, there is a severe congestion in the air cargo zone.
