Infinium wins Project Investment of the Year Award at SAF Investor London 2024

Infinium’s Project Roadrunner received the 2023 Project Investment of the Year – US Award at the SAF Investor London 2024 event. Infinium previously announced that the project in West Texas will receive a 75 million dollar project equity investment from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst (Catalyst), subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions.

The SAF Investor Awards were designed to celebrate transactions that move the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry forward. SAF Investor’s mission is to help innovators find capital to decarbonise aviation.

Project Roadrunner will convert waste carbon dioxide (CO2) and renewable power into SAF and other low-carbon fuels. This Power-to-Liquids (PtL) eFuels facility is expected to be the largest PtL eFuels project in North America once operational. Catalyst invests in projects supporting emerging climate technologies to reduce emissions and accelerate the clean energy transition.

This commitment represents Catalyst’s first equity investment. “When we invest in any first-of-a-kind project, we look for technologies with the potential to make a big climate impact and teams that can execute and make their promise real. Infinium combines a groundbreaking clean fuel the world badly needs with the talent and experience to bring it to scale,” said Mario Fernandez, Head of Breakthrough Energy Catalyst.

“We could not be prouder of everything the Infinium team has accomplished and know it’s just the start of an exciting journey to decarbonise global aviation.” Project Roadrunner will convert an existing brownfield gas-to-liquids project into a fully integrated fuels facility that will deliver products to U.S. and international markets. It will primarily produce Infinium eSAF, a sustainable aviation fuel with the potential to significantly reduce the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) associated with air travel.

PtL SAF is expected to reduce lifecycle GHG emissions in aviation by around 90 per cent, which is higher than the emissions reductions achieved using SAF on the market today. Project Roadrunner will also produce Infinium naphtha for plastics manufacturing and Infinium eDiesel for hard-to-electrify transportation methods, such as long-haul trucking and maritime applications. “Our fuels projects are well positioned to scale, but partnerships are critical to allowing us to do so rapidly enough to meet soaring demand for sustainable aviation fuel,” said Robert Schuetzle, CEO at Infinium. “Breakthrough Energy Catalyst models the way for investors committed to helping the world achieve its decarbonisation commitments, demonstrating that doing the right thing can simultaneously result in positive economic returns.”

Infinium has numerous eFuels projects in development across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Australia. SAF Investor is a dedicated publication for innovators, producers, capitalists, and customers involved in sustainable aviation fuel. Only transactions signed between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, were considered for the 2023 SAF Investor Awards.
