PNG Air despatched its Dash 8 freighter with three tonnes of much-needed food and medical supplies for survivors of the recent Southern Highlands earthquake. A magnitude 7.5 quake rocked the rugged Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea some 560 km (350 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby in late February.

“The devastation caused by the earthquakes in the highlands has been on a scale never before seen in this country and individuals and businesses around the country have banded together to help send relief supplies into the region,” says PNG Air chairman, Murray Woo. “PNG Air is doing our best to support the relief operation and has made our Dash 8 freighter available at no charge to assist with moving these desperately needed supplies to the people in need.

“We are a relatively small company but our staff feel strongly that we also need to play our part and this is one way that we can help. The donated supplies have been collected by Hela Earthquake Relief and then despatched to our cargo operation who sorted and prepared the goods for uplift.”

Staff and crew gave their time to this relief effort, says Woo.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the recent disaster and we hope that in some small way we have contributed to getting their lives back to normal,” he says.
