FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, honours its workforce by naming its latest aircraft after a team member’s child. Samuel, 11 from Stockton on Tees in the Northeast of England, is the latest child to have a FedEx Express Boeing 757 named in his honour as part of the FedEx Aircraft Naming Programme. His father Martin, a long-standing employee, received the good news this month after applying for the scheme last year.
Martin said: “I had completely forgotten about the application until I saw an email saying an aircraft was being named after Samuel. I was thrilled and could not wait for Samuel to see it! FedEx Aircraft Naming Programme is a great initiative which seems pretty simple, but really has a wow factor!”
The programme was launched in 1973, when a Falcon aeroplane was named Wendy, after the daughter of FedEx chairman and CEO Fred Smith.
Samuel was beyond excited at the news and said: “Getting a plane named after me is just out of this world! I have been following it on Plane Finder!”
Flying regularly in and out Memphis, the newly named aircraft, Samuel N996FD, makes up part of the company’s 679 aircraft, delivering to more than 220 countries and territories worldwide. Samuel joins over 440 FedEx employees’ children who have received this honour, saluting the vital role employees play.
