DB Schenker invests in Ireland

DB Schenker has successfully completed three of its four major development projects to provide larger, state-of-the-art operations in Ireland. As part of a €94M investment in new facilities across the country, sites at Shannon (County Clare), Leixlip (County Kildare) and Baldonnel (County Dublin) are now complete and fully operational. An additional new facility in Dublin is shortly to commence construction to house DB Schenker’s Land operations in Ireland and is scheduled for completion in January 2025.

Demand from Healthcare and Technology customers is powering strong growth across DB Schenker’s business in Ireland, which now employs 800 people. The global logistics provider initiated extensive facility investment to cater for ongoing and new customer needs across the country.

Eoghan Turner Head of Real Estate for the UK & Ireland says: “The last three years have seen a period of major growth at DB Schenker which has resulted in significant new investment in Irish Real Estate, as well as the upgrading of our property portfolio across the UK & Ireland cluster. We have been successful in delivering several large-scale projects, not least the construction of our 220,000 sq. ft. LEED Gold Leixlip facility, a long-term lease of 130,000 sq. ft at Baldonnell Business Park, and the delivery of our new facility in Shannon. We will continue to concentrate on similar high quality, sustainable assets as we go into the future”.

Full detail of the investments are as follows:

  • Shannon – As part of their drive to facilitate further growth and to support customers inthe West of Ireland, DB Schenker purchased 6.2 acres of development land from Shannon Commercial Properties in 2020.
    They delivered 40,000 sq ft. of high-quality warehousing, as well as 12,000 sq ft. of Grade A office accommodation, providing a modern and inviting working environment.
  • Leixlip – DB Schenker embarked on a project in 2020 to deliver a new state-of-the-art facility which started with the acquisition of 14.2 acres of land at Liffey Business Campus in May 2021. PJ Hegarty & Sons were appointed as the main contractor to construct a 220,000 sq ft. facility, which includes 200,000 of high-quality high bay warehousing, together with 20,000 sq ft. of high specification Grade A office accommodation. The site also provides additional land for 50,000 sq ft. of future expansion when required. Sustainability was a major focus in the facility’s design and construction. It is LEED Gold certified, making it one of the more sustainable industrial buildings in Ireland. Sustainability features include solar PV panels, EV charging stations, infrastructure for future expansion of sustainability systems, on-site gym and cycling facilities for employees.
  • Baldonnel – In early 2022, DB Schenker leased a new 130,000 sq ft. facility at Baldonnell Business Park. The facility consists of high-quality, high-bay warehouse space as well as Grade A office accommodation across two floors. Additionally, DB Schenker invested approximately €3 million in a specialised fit-out for the facility.
  • Dublin Land Terminal – As part of their ongoing growth plans for Land Transport in Ireland, DB Schenker are close to acquiring approximately 6 acres of land in Dublin to facilitate the construction of a new Land Terminal. The terminal will be c.45,000 sq ft. and will provide a transport hub for their Land product, as well as two floors of Grade A offices.

Advanced warehousing capabilities alongside automated facilities and combined with the introduction of electric vehicles into its Irish transport fleet are key components of DB Schenker’s ongoing growth strategy across Ireland.
