Lufthansa Cargo has ensured Christmas mail and parcels between Germany and the USA arrived on time with six additional freighter flights operated for Deutsche Post.

From 13 November, Lufthansa Cargo has operated weekly MD-11 Freighter flights between Frankfurt and New York on Mondays, offering 60 tonnes of capacity, mainly filled with seasonal greetings and gifts.

The final flight travels from Frankfurt on 18 December and returns on 19 December, having operated six times exclusively for Deutsche Post, ensuring Santa Claus’ products arrive where needed.

Lufthansa Cargo chief product and sales officer, Alexis von Hoensbroech says: “In the six weeks before Christmas in particular, our Airmail/eCommerce product is in great demand for packages sent on short notice and deadline-sensitive shipments.”

He adds: “For this reason, we increased our capacity exclusively for our close partner Deutsche Post AG in recent years. However, 2017 is a special situation, as we have never before organised so much additional cargo space on such short notice.”

Despite the high cost, it was essential to ensure products reached their destinations, with von Hoensbroech says: “We know that many gifts will only manage to make it under the tree on time thanks to these extra flights.”

Lufthansa Cargo’s Airmail/eCommerce product was developed for delivering letters and parcels in the fastest way possible, with a tailor-made timetable, a strong network with cooperation partners and three airmail hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna.
