Amsterdam Airport Schiphol handled 134,350 tonnes in June, down from the previous three months of May, April and March.
The June figure is lower than May, April and March when it handled 139,734 tonnes, 134,625 tonnes and 146,545 tonnes, respectively. The June figure, however, is up on January and February when it handled 123,060 tonnes and 123,387 tonnes.
The June figure is up eight per cent on the same month in 2013, but lower than the 14.1 per cent rise in May last year. For the year-to-date (YTD), January to June, Schiphol has handled 801,700 tonnes, up 8.8 per cent on last year.
The largest growth was in Europe, which expanded by 16.2 per cent to 76,598 tonnes for the YTD. Europe saw its biggest increase in June when it rose 26.4 per cent to 13,071 tonnes, compared to 2013, even though this was down on May and March, when it handled 14,081 tonnes and 14,082 tonnes, respectively.
North America grew by 14.6 per cent to 143,686 tonnes and the Middle East grew by 14.5 per cent to 106,937 tonnes. Africa saw modest growth of 4.1 per cent to 89,010 tonnes, because of Middle Eastern carriers. Latin America shrunk by 5.2 per cent to 80,597 tonnes. YTD, it was down every month this year except February, when it rose 4.1 per.
Schiphol’s cargo senior vice president, Enno Osinga says: “These figures are clear indicators that the European air cargo market is stabilising, and returning to moderate growth. Freighter operations have grown again, but by less than the increase in total traffic.”
